Long Beach City Box Score
LONG BEACH, Calif. -
The Cougars took a while to settle into their offense before defeating Long Beach City College, 55-35, on Tuesday evening. COC fell behind in the opening minutes of the contest after Long Beach took a 13-5 lead at the 12-minute mark. The lead would be short lived as COC closed out the half on a 19-1 run that gave the Cougars a 33-19 lead at halftime. In the second half the Cougar defense held Long Beach to 16 points, but COC’s offense struggled to put up 22 second-half points, while shooting 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from the field. Starter Ashley Wakefield had 12 points and 11 rebounds on a 6-for-9 shooting night. Guard Britney Bradley added 11 points.

11-19-08 Cougars Second Half Surge Not Enough To Overcome No. 1 Mt. SAC
Mt. SAC Box Score
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. —
No. 7 ranked College of the Canyons dropped their second game of the season to No. 1 ranked Mt. San Antonio College 58-48 Wednesday, as the Cougars struggled to keep pace with a well balanced Mounties attack. Led by Canyons forward Charity Smith’s 25 points and six rebounds the Cougars (3-2) matched Mt. SAC (6-0) bucket for bucket early in the first half, before the Mounties went on decisive 14-5 run in the final six minutes of the period to open up a big 31 -21 lead. Though the Cougars battled throughout, their second half effort would not be enough to overcome a Mt. SAC squad featuring hot-shooting Mounties duo Ashley Adams (13 points and five rebounds) and Jordan Kuzma (13 points and seven rebounds) — as Canyons combined to shoot just over 32 percent from the floor. Canyons will next travel to El Camino College, Friday Nov. 21, for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

WALNUT, Calif.
- The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team dropped their season opener to Foothill College, 66-58, in the Cougars’ first game of the Mt. SAC Tip-Off tournament. The Cougars (0-1) were well defended all night, shooting a combined 31 percent (22 of 71) from the floor and finishing the first half with just 19 points before pouring it on in the second half with 39 points to keep it close. But the Owls (1-0), who were the state runner-ups last season, were too much to overcome, as they out rebounded Canyons on both ends of the floor and limited the Cougars’ scoring opportunities. Cougar freshman forward Ashley Wakefield registered a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while guard Brittney Bradley added 12 points and five assists.

College of the Canyons won its first game of the season Saturday, trouncing Sierra College in convincing fashion, 79-58, in the Cougars’ second game of the Mt. SAC Tip-Off tourney. Canyons (1-1) flaunted a well-balanced attack throughout the contest, with double-digit point totals registered by guard Brittney Bradley (17), forward Charity Smith (17), forward Lindsay Knox (13) and guard Jasmine Crayon (11). Knox also snagged seven rebounds to compliment forward Ashley Wakefield’s game leading 13 boards. The Cougars shot a combined 52.5 percent from the floor, despite going 0-for-5 from behind the arc.

The Cougars continued their high-scoring attack Sunday, handily defeating San Bernardino Valley College, 81-68, to win the consolation bracket of the Mt. SAC Tip-Off tourney. After stumbling out of the gate in their first game of the tourney against Foothill College, the Cougars stormed back to defeat their next two opponents by a combined 34 points in winning their bracket. The Canyons lineup again saw several players score in the double-digits, with double-doubles from forwards Ashley Wakefield (18 points and 16 rebounds) and Charity Smith (13 points and 11 rebounds) leading the way against the Wolverines (1-2). Rounding out the top Cougar scorers were Britney Bradley (14 points), Jasmine Crayon (13 points) and Lindsey Knox (11 points).
