College of the Canyons scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but it wasn't enough to beat visiting Cosumnes River, as the Cougars fell 5-3.
Canyons sophomore JC Cloney took a tough loss, with the Hawks lineup doing its damage in the seventh and eighth innings.
Up until that point Cloney (2-3) had allowed just two hits on the day. The lefty finished the day having allowed four runs, three earned, and striking out three batters over seven innings of work.
COC right fielder Roy Verdejo led COC at the plate, finishing 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. The freshman is in the middle of an 11-game hitting streak to begin the season.
The Cougars (7-4) will host Cosumnes River in the series finale on Friday.
