College of the Canyons used a mid-inning surge to move ahead then held on for a 12-9 victory over L.A. Mission College on Thursday at Mike Gillespie Field.
The Canyons (15-21, 8-9) win evened its three-game series vs. LAMC (16-20, 7-10) ahead of Saturday's upcoming series finale.
The Cougars scored four runs in the first to give starting pitcher Chad Stanchfield an early cushion. Brady Yeaman's two-run single capped an opening inning that also saw Liam Ostrom and Michael Hogen draw bases loaded walks.
In the second, Hogen singled in another run before Chris Cailotto's solo home run made it a 6-2 Canyons advantage.
L.A. Mission was able to tie the game in the fourth on a two-run home run from Erik Polanco, and later briefly took the lead at 7-6 when a passed ball allowed a run to score.
COC got the run back in the fifth when Hogen came home on a wild pitch beginning a sequence that produced three runs. Cailotto's RBI single and Ben Strutt's run-scoring double eventually put the Cougars back in front at 9-7.
Stanchfield lasted five innings and was charged with seven runs with four walks and five strikeouts to get his first win of the season.
The Eagles were able to push across a pair of runs in the ninth before Ricky Sturm entered the game to record the final out and earn his fourth save of the season.
Kevin Foderaro also tossed two innings of scoreless relief in the game.
Cailotto finished the game 2-for-4 with the home run, two runs and two RBIs. Yeaman, Strutt and Hogen each finished with two RBIs in the game.
COC travels to L.A. Mission for Saturday's rubber match at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 18.
