SANTA MONICA — College of the Canyons freshman Sebastian Villalobos broke his own school record for the second time this season and two other Cougars recorded personal best times during the Western State Conference (WSC) Championship meet hosted by Santa Monica College.
Canyons started the three-day meet in strong fashion with a pair of top-10 finishes from Villalobos and sophomore Diego Rozbruch. The duo would continue to make waves throughout the weekend.
On Friday, Villalobos clocked a new school-record time of 58.69 in the 100-yard breaststroke to place second in that event. That record-breaking pace marked the third time the freshman from Valencia High School had reset the school record.
Rozbruch swam a season-best time of 55.84 in the 100-yard butterfly to place seventh in that event.
Villalobos and Rozbruch later joined Ethan Thai and Daniel Cardenas in combining for a time of 1:48.31 in the 200-yard medley relay, good for sixth place.
Thai also performed well individually with personal best times in the 100-yard freestyle (12th/54.76) and 100-yard backstroke events (16th/1:09.81).
With the regular season having drawn to a close, Villalobos will now wait to learn if he has qualified to compete at the 3C2A Swim & Dive State Championships being held May 1-3, at Santa Rosa Junior College.
