SAN MARCOS — College of the Canyons competed at its second four-year meet of the season, this time running at the annual Mangrum Invitational hosted by California State University, San Marcos on March 27.
The Cougars combined to win two events while posting a combined 13 top-10 results between the men's and women's squads.
Once again, it was sophomore Hazel Rhodes leading the way with a Mangrum Invite meet-record time of 53.99 to win the 400m event. That time equaled Rhodes' school-record pace established during the Ben Brown Invitational hosted by CSU, Fullerton on March 13.
Rhodes outran six competitors from four-year schools who finished in the top-10 of the field to win the event. That field also included three runners representing 3C2A schools.
Elsewhere in the women's competition it was Monique Fulling continuing her spectacular sophomore campaign with a pair of top-seven finishes. Fulling took fourth in the 400h at a time of 1:05.23 and was also seventh in the 100h event at 15.27.
Fulling and Rhodes competed together on the Cougars' 4x100 relay team. The lineup of Fulling, Syrai Piper, Amara Shields and Rhodes took third at a time of 3:54.52. That same grouping also placed seventh in the 4x100 race at 48.35.
Sophomore Victoria Jamison ran a time of 18:15.72 in the 5,000m to place 10th. Freshman Gabriella Nickels threw for a personal-best mark of 28.95m in the javelin to take ninth.
In men's competition sophomore Antonio Moore won the 110h at a time of 14.69, tops in the field of more than 20. Moore's pace bested the next five runners who were all representing four-year schools.
Moore also finished runner-up in the 400h (53.68) just behind event winner Nathaniel Gardner (53.34) of Middlebury College.
Elijah Reid finishing ninth in the 100m (11.02) and Thurlee Bowers taking ninth (22.19) in the 200m represented the other two individual top-10 finishes on the day.
In the relay events, it was the team of Bowers, Moore, Josh Smith and Reid clocking a time of 41.89 in the 4x100 relay, good for fourth. The combination of Smith, Alejandro Cueto, Matthew Grider and Moore ran ninth in the 4x400 relay (3:28.53).
Canyons will next compete at the Cerritos College Invitational on Friday, April 10.
