SAN BERNARDINO — No. 7 College of the Canyons shut out its opponent for the second straight match, this time emerging with a 2-0 road victory at San Bernardino Valley College.
Canyons (4-0) started the week by earning the No. 7 state ranking in the first California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) rankings released Sept 16. The Cougars also sit at No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches national junior college DIII rankings.
COC broke through for its first score of the game in the fourth minute with Leila Sadra's second goal in as many games. The play was assisted by sophomore Bailey Williamson who has recorded at least one assist in all four games to lead the Western State Conference (WSC) in that category.
In the 19th minute it was Williamson creating again, this time finding Lily Golphenee for her second score of the season. Golphenee has now scored in back-to-back contests. The second assist also placed Williamson's season point total at nine, which ranks second in WSC.
Canyons goalkeeper Rebecca Ferguson (4-0) was spectacular once again. The freshman out of Valencia High School recorded seven saves in the match and has been in net for the duration of COC's win streak.
SBVC (3-1-1) worked for eight shots in the game to keep Ferguson busy throughout. Each side earned a corner kick in the match.
The Cougars return to the road Friday, Sept. 19, at Allan Hancock College for another non-conference tilt. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
