VENTURA — College of the Canyons completed its successful run through the Western State Conference (WSC) Singles & Doubles Championships, with the Cougars winning both the individual conference championship and doubles conference crown, while claiming five spots at the upcoming 3C2A State Championships.
COC freshman Emma Chodur was crowned the WSC Singles Champion after going a perfect 4-0 through the tourney. Chodur is now 19-0 vs. community college competition this season. She has also qualified for entry into the 3C2A Singles Tourney and is expected to be the state's No. 1 seed.
Chodur's run through the conference tourney began with a straight sets victory over Franziska Stockman of Santa Barbara City College (6-1, 6-1). In day two action it was Chodur easily advancing past L.A. Mission College sophomore Alitzel Ortega Partida (6-1, 6-0).
On day three, Chodur bested sophomore Kailani Lua of Bakersfield College (6-1, 6-1) to advance to the semifinal round. Later in the day, Chodur posted a hard-fought victory over Bernadatte Hovhanasian of Glendale College (6-2, 4-6, 10-7) to earn a berth into the tourney's championship round.
In the championship match up, Chodur was able to overcome an opening-set loss to become the first singles conference champion in COC women's tennis program history. Set scores were 0-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Chodur was also part of the first doubles conference championship in program history alongside partner Baylee Renfro.
The Chodur/Renfro pairing received on opening round bye then advanced with a 7-0 victory over Zoe Allais/Sofia Magdaleno of Santa Monica College. That match was halted before the eighth point after an SMC injury.
The next day it was Chodur/Renfro playing to an 8-4 win over the Jamielyn Diaz/Roxanna Tahani-Bidmeshki duo representing Glendale College.
On the tourney's final day the history-making duo from Canyons bested Alice Guillaumond/Iris Besmer of Santa Barbara City College (6-1, 6-2) in advancing to the championship match.
In the finals, Chodur/Renfro joined forces once more to move past Kailani Lua/Naomi Pavletich (6-3, 0-6, 15-13) and into the championship circle.
The Chodur/Renfro pairing moves on to the 3C2A Doubles State Championship tourney and should be among the top seeds in that tourney bracket.
In all, Canyons claimed five spots at the 3C2A State Championships in Ojai. Chodur and Renfro will both move on to compete in singles competition.
Additionally, the Cougars will see all three of its doubles pairings compete at the state championships. Included in that group are Chodur/Renfro, Lauren Neal/Breana Lemos and Nadia Godoy-Ortega/Olivia Snyder.
Neal/Lemos advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles tourney to secure their bid.
Meanwhile, Godoy-Ortega/Snyder lost their opening tourney match before bouncing back to win three straight in the tourney's back draw bracket en route to capturing a state tourney bid.
