Chodur Finishes State Runner-Up to Achieve Another Program First
By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director
OJAI — College of the Canyons freshman Emma Chodur finished her first season of collegiate tennis as 3C2A state runner-up, capping a season in which she also won conference Player of the Year and Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rookie of the Year honors.
Chodur's run ended in the finals of the 3C2A Women's Tennis Singles State Championship tourney at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club on Sunday, after falling to back-to-back state champion Mina Koloski of Chabot College.
Already the Western State Conference (WSC) individual champion, and member of the WSC champion doubles team, Chodur played through a grueling four days of competition at the state tourney that included a combined 11 singles and doubles matches.
In the singles championship match vs. Koloski, Chodur built an early 4-1 advantage behind a series of strong serves and baseline attacks. Koloski eventually responded and was able to get to within a point at 4-3.
Later, with Chodur leading 5-4 Koloski fought off two set points and eventually took the first set 7-5. Koloski then won the second set 6-3 in a back-and-forth battle that Chodur competed in until the very end. The title was Koloski's second in as many years.
Chodur finished the state championship tourney with a 5-1 record. That improved her season record to 25-1 vs. community college competition. Her appearance in the 3C2A state finals represents yet another program first achieved by the freshman from Blue Ridge Academy in Maricopa.
She is also the first WSC Singles champion, Player of the Year, and ITA award winner in school history.
COC's doubles team of Chodur and Renfro also put together a memorable run with the duo advancing to the semifinals of the 3C2A state championship doubles tournament.
The Chodur/Renfro pairing was defeated by the team of Jaelyn Rivera/Priscilla Grinner of L.A. Mission College in a Sunday morning match that took place mere hours before Chodur's singles match. But not before posting a 4-1 tourney record and establishing a mark as the most successful doubles team in program history.
Rivera/Grinner went on to win the 3C2A Doubles State Championship, with L.A. Mission also winning the women's team state title earlier in the month.
Chodur/Renfro finish the 2026 season with a 21-5 doubles record including regular season, conference/state tourney and postseason matches. The duo represents the first WSC doubles championship in program history.
Renfro competed in the singles state championship tourney but was eliminated following an opening-round win during Thursday's opening action.
The doubles teams of Lauren Neal/Breana Lemos and Nadia Godoy-Ortega/Olivia Snyder both represented Canyons at the state tourney.
Neal/Lemos teamed for an opening round victory before being eliminated by the team of Koloski/Gracie Barco of Chabot College.
Godoy-Ortega/Snyder received an opening round bye but were defeated in the bracket's next round.
