Canyons Begins Conference Play with 3-1 Victory Over Citrus College

College of the Canyons started conference play with a 3-1 victory over Citrus College at the Cougar Cage on Friday, snapping a nine-match winless streak. Set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 25-16, 25-19.
Canyons (3-10, 1-0) won a tight opening set before seeing Citrus (8-7, 0-1) knot things up after two. The Cougars then took decisive set victories in the third and fourth frames.
COC hit just under .300 for the match but were able to take advantage of 28 hitting errors by the Owls. Canyons also served up 12 aces in the match, compared to just six from Citrus.
Freshman Katelyn Nelson was active throughout the contest, finishing with a game-high 18 kills and hitting .630 for the match. She added two aces and a block, along with three digs.
Allison Wieckowski also had a strong hitting night, ending the night at .444 with eight kills to show for it. Madison Andrews was next with seven kills and Rylee Booth added five.
Morgan Dumlao led the way with 24 assists alongside nine digs. Jazmine Muñoz added to the attack with 18 assists and a pair of kills.
Defensively it was Adrianna Pakes with a pair of blocks to go with her four kills, while Andrews added five block assists.
Samantha Linder recorded a game-high 16 digs and was trailed by 14 from Muñoz and 13 from Addison DeGard.
Citrus hit just .115 for the match but featured a pair of hitters reach double-digit kill totals in Sophia Martinez (18) and Emma Cristales (13). Martinez also added 10 digs to her line.
Canyons will continue Western State Conference (WSC), South Division play on Wednesday, Oct. 1, with a road trip to Glendale College. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
